We started the Bass Fishing Archives because we not only love the history of the sport – we feel its history needs to be told accurately and preserved for all to see. We’re proud to have the only site dedicated to the subject and for the great readers who visit the site.

When we conceived the idea for the Bass Fishing Archives, we knew we couldn’t tell the whole story. We just weren’t around in the early part of the 20th century. That’s where we knew readers would eventually jump on the bandwagon and correct us if we were wrong with respect to some part of the history or introduce us to something we missed.

This is where the today’s book review comes into play. [Read more…]

Early Advertising: Garcia – More Than Selling Tackle

Today’s anglers are hit with numerous infomercials and hard-selling tactics – to the point it’s no wonder that so many novices have a hard time trying to figure out what to buy. I hate to say that the tackle industry has become synonymous with the proverbial used car shark but from the outside looking in I wonder if it has. I don’t know if I credit that to the industry itself or should the internet and its speed-of-light access to the masses be blamed. Maybe it’s the angler (who’s only been fishing for three years) who’s willing to flood Facebook with, “John’s -Garage-Worms-are-the-Best posts,” we should blame. Maybe I’m just old and I don’t “get” all this new-fangled “advertising.” [Read more…]

Historical Books

Over time there have been hundreds of books written on the subject of bass fishing. For the bass enthusiast these books offer possible learning experiences – even if they were written 20, 30 or more years ago. A good example of this is a book written by Buck Taylor called The Complete Guide to Using Depthfinders. Written in the early 80s, this book may be dated with respect to the technologies available at the time, but scientifically it’s still 100-percent relative when it comes to teaching the use of depthfinders.

Unfortunately, not all of these mostly-out-of-print books are worth reading. And, because they are mostly out of print, if you wanted to buy one you may have to pay top dollar at places like eBay or Amazon in order to get a copy. Because of this we here at the Bass Fishing Archives have decided to add this Historical Book Review page to the site. It’s a place where anyone can come to see what books have been published on what subjects as they pertain to bass fishing. Then you can read about what’s actually in the book, see some shots taken of the book and then decide on your own whether or not to drop down some money for it.

Over time we’ll continue populating this page as we read and reread what we currently have in our libraries. If there’s a book you don’t see listed, let us know and we’ll get on it. More than likely we have it but if we don’t, we’ll buy it, read it and give you our thoughts on it. To read a review, just click on the picture of the book and you’ll be redirected to the actual review.
