As the son of renowned bass biologist and product inventor Loren Hill, Kenyon Hill may have been destined to pursue a career in tournament fishing. He fished his first B.A.S.S. event in December of 1986 at the age of 22, and since then has qualified for four Bassmaster Classics and has won three events. So far we’ve covered the six Bassmaster Classic qualifying events for the 1978 Bassmaster Tournament Trail along with the mid-season Bass Champs event. Today we’re looking at the 1978 Bassmaster Federation Championship, which was held on Lake Eufaula, AL, in August, 1978.

Up to this time no state team had won back-to-back championships, although the Tennessee team had won twice, the inaugural event in 1973 and again in 1976. Other winners had been Missouri (1974), Louisiana (1975) and Alabama (1977). [Read more…]

Well, we only had one person try to answer this week’s trivia contest sponsored by Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits. Unfortunately, he didn’t provide the right answers for all the questions. This happens quite a bit and I assume it’s because people come to the site and see someone has answered the questions and they assume those answers are correct. In 1982, a 35 year-old Ken Cook earned his first B.A.S.S. Invitational win, and the second of the six Bassmaster victories in his storied career. The career was marked by 14 Bassmaster Classic appearances and a win in the 1991 iteration of the event held on Maryland’s Upper Chesapeake Bay, as well as three Forrest Wood Cup qualifications. The May 1994 North Carolina Bassmaster Top 100 on Lake Norman marked the lone win in Mike Bingham’s B.A.S.S. career. It didn’t come easily to the Jackson, Mississippi pro, either. He’d been financing his fishing career by working as a mussel diver on Kentucky Lake, and had sold his boat earlier in the year when he’d determined that professional angling was a dead end. With a sudden change of heart, he got a boat at the last minute for Norman. According to Bassmaster, he’d planned to camp for the tournament but ended up rooming with a charitable Shaw Grigsby.
