Congrats to Steven Strasser for edging out the win this week in our Trivia contest. For details about the winning answers, read below.

Following the professional tournament trails around the country, we currently find the FLW Tour pros practicing up on Lake Eufaula in Alabama this week, also known as Walter F. George Reservoir. Word is the bass are post-spawn and starting to move out toward the deep ledges. We might see some big bags weighed in beginning with Day 1 on Thursday. But that’s the present. If you look back at the history on this lake, you’ll find a treasure trove of interesting bassin’ trivia. Congratulations to Adam Hinkle for winning this week’s trivia contest!!!  For the answrs read below.

Fifteen years ago this month, Byron Velvick won the 2000 Bassmaster California Western Invitational on Clear Lake by a margin of more than 11 pounds. It wasn’t like he was beating up on the Little Sisters of the Poor, either, as the three anglers directly behind him were Skeet Reese, Aaron Martens and Brett Hite. Other western/national powers like Dean Rojas (6th) and Ish Monroe (9th), as well as legends like Gary Dobyns (13th) and Mike Folkestad (16th) also made the top 20, but all fell well short of Velvick’s 83-05 total.

Velvick certainly wasn’t a newcomer to the sport, having previously won the 1990 and 1996 U.S. Open Championships, but the Clear Lake victory marked the first of his three B.A.S.S. wins to date. In winning, he also set the B.A.S.S. record for total weight in a three-day, five-fish-limit event. [Read more…]

Congratulations to John Karbowski for winning this week’s Bass Fishing Archives Trivia Contest!  For the answers, please read below.

Bobby Padgett of Columbus, Georgia won the second B.A.S.S. tournament he fished, the 1996 Alabama Invitational on Lake Eufaula. In fact, he ran away with the victory, beating second place finisher Kevin VanDam by 11 ½ pounds.

While it was one of only three top ten B.A.S.S. finishes for Padgett in 21 attempts, he has long been well-known as a top stick in the area, with many lower-level wins to his credit. After the tournament, Colin Moore wrote that Padgett had “finished first or second in every summer tournament at Eufaula he entered during the past four years, including three consecutive wins on the Red Man trail.” [Read more…]
