The 1996 Bassmaster MegaBucks tournament in Texas was not a typical tournament – it was a war of attrition. The anglers competed over the course of six days – the first four on Richland-Chambers, the last two on White Rock Lake – and a variety of inclement weather conditions. Heavy winds from varying directions wiped out some of the patterns that would otherwise have dominated, and Dewey Kendrick had to postpone the last day of the opening round of competition as a result of 30mph winds which created a wind chill of 16 degrees.

Additionally, White Rock was at best a cramped and mediocre fishery, and the nine finalists managed to extract only 17 bass from its waters over the course of two days, with only a pair of them catching more than two total. In fact, second place finisher Denny Brauer blanked on the final day and when the scales closed he was still tied with Mississippi’s Jeff Magee for the lead, only the third time a tie was recorded at the end of regularly-scheduled B.A.S.S. competition. The two were sent out for a sudden-death fish-off and Magee was the first one to catch a legal fish, giving him the biggest payday of his career.

It was the lone win for Magee in 139 B.A.S.S. tournaments. In subsequent years he was a runner-up twice, in the 2000 Top 150 on the Mobile Delta and again at the 2002 Central Open on the Red River, but never claimed another victory. He last participated in a B.A.S.S. event in 2005.

We here at the Bass Fishing Archives must be hungry today, because all four questions relate to food or eating. Answer them all correctly and you’ll win this week’s contest.

  1. In the days before boat wraps were common, let alone required, the side of Magee’s bass boat was emblazoned with the name of a snack food company? What company was it?
  2. Another angler who made the cut to the final round continues to fish today with a title sponsor from the food industry. Who is it, and what company sponsors him?
  3. Fred Bland of Alabama finished 15th overall at the Megabucks event despite leading after the first two days. What is Bland’s food-oriented nickname?
  4. Finally, what lure did the bass that Magee caught in overtime eat to give him the win?

The answers and winner will be announced Thursday. Good luck!
